Katie Holmes - 12 things I'll never take for granted

The small-town teen idol, now age 24, has grown into a big-time movie star. But no matter how great her fame, there are still some people, places and things (including a certain teddy bear) that will always be special to Katie.

By Katie Holmes as told to Jonathan Small

1- My stuffed animal

In my room, I have George, a lion, and a teddy bear named... Actually, maybe I shouldn't mention their name; I want to protect their identity! My mom got the teddy bear for me at FAO Schwarz when I went to NY for a modeling competition in my early teens. I was kind of "discovered" there, so he has a sentimental value. When I'm traveling alone on a long trip, I sometimes take one of them with me to keep me company.

2- Prada Heels

Nothing beats a great pair of Prada Heels and an expensive bottle of pinot grigrio. They really set the mood. The shoes are sexy, and the wine loosens people up - not that I'm endorsing alcohol! Throw in a Cary Grant movie, and you're good to go.

3- Comfy Pants

There's nothing better than a good pair of fleece pants or sweats. I call them "comfies" - you know, Saturday pants. And Wilmington, NC, where Dawson's Creek was shot, is such a small town that you could actually get up and go to the coffee shop in your pj's or comfy pants. Sadly, I've learned I can't do that here in LA. You always run into people in the business, and you don't want to be like, "Hi!" in your comfies.

4- My work

Acting is not a stable business, so when you actually have work, you can't take it for granted. You don't know what you're going to be doing in three months, and you really have to stay focused and enjoy the time when you're actually on set, doing the thing that you love to do, acting.

I mean, God, I can't believe I am here and I get to be in the movies. It's still incredible to me! And I've had the opportunity to work with a lot of amazing actors and directors in such a short amount of time. Like when I was working on Wonder Boys - the whole cast was staying in Pittsburg, and at night I would have dinner with Robert Downey Jr., Tobey Maguire, and Michael Douglas. It was very intimidating - and very inspiring. I was the youngest - only 19 at the time - and I didn't know what I was even doing. I kept asking myself, How is this happening?

5- My health

I've never been really, really sick, but there have been a few people in my life who have - and it's made me realize that if you don't have your health, you don't have anything. I also probably feel this way because I was a premature baby. My friends make fun of me because I like to brag about how I was born two months early, and how I was underweight and had to live in the hospital for months, hooked up to all sorts of devices. My parents say it was a miracle that I lived. When you're a preemie, there's this pride you feel, like, "I've lived through it; I fought the battle."

6- Ben and Jerry's

I love Ben and Jerry's. The only flavor I don't like is Cherry Garcia, and I could probably scarf that down too. The " Everything but the ..." flavor is at the top of my list right now. It's got all these yummy things in it: Heath Bars, white chocolate, peanut butter cups. Don't get my wrong - I usually eat healthy. But I like to satisfy that Ben and Jerry's habit a few times a month. Everything but the... - you gotta try it.

7- My best friend

My best friend from home is name Meghann. I've known her since kindergarden, and we're like sisters. Even though I live in L.A. now (I just bought a house here) and she's still in my hometown of Toledo, OH, we totally keep in touch. She's the type of friend you can call 25 times in one day - althought sometimes she actually tells me, "You can't call me anymore!" But I know Meghann will always have my back - and I'll always have hers.

8- My Honda

When I landed the role in Dawosn's Creek, my dad got a little Honda del Sol for me. It's like a jelly bean, and the top pops off - but you have to do it yourself. The actors on the show used to make fun of me for driving that, but I think deep down they wanted it. That car helped keep me grounded. My life really chaned in a matter of six months: In june 1997, I was an unknown graduating from high school, and in January '98, I was on TV and everybody knew who I was. It was wonderful but a big adjustment.

When I moved to L.A., my family and I decided the Honda might not be very safe to drive here. So I switched to an SUV, which has one of those navigational systems and is very snazzy. My Honda lives in Toledo now, and Meghann drives it, but I really miss that little car.

9- Face lotions

I love face lotions. I use Jurlique right now. It's this wonderful, herbal renewal gel. My mom always said, " It's more important you're moisturizing your skin more than cleansing it, because cleansers dry it out." That's really true - except if you wear pound of makeup every day, like I have to. On those days, or when I'm really tired after a though shoot, with a mask, and get all feminine. Then I put cucumber cleansing wipes over my eyes. It's really refreshing and relaxing.

10 - Being the baby

I was born last in my family, so I got to watch everybody grow up, and I got a lot opportunities that my four older siblings didn't get. Like, my mom brought me out to California for six weeks to do auditions when I was 17. If I were the oldest, she would never have been able to do that, but the youngest, there was nobody left at home to look after.

Also, I've always had a lot of support from my siblings. It's kind of fun to be cute, little one. In fact, I'm finding it hard to grown out of that. Sometimes I'm like, Do I really want to be an adult? Maybe I'll be the cute, little one for the rest of my life.

11- The beach

Maybe I love the beach so much because I'm from the Midwest and didn't grow up near it. I'm a big fan of the ocean. In fact, I was just on Hermosa Beach in California with some friends. It was so beautiful. We saw dolphins, and I crashed into waves.

That was another wonderful thing about living in North Carolina: The house I lived in there was on an island that sits right between the Atlantic Ocean and the intercoastal waterway, so I had an incredible view of both. It was so gorgeous and relaxing - every day, ducks would cross my street. I like fisherman towns like that, one with beautiful beach and ocean, but also for of real people, not just resorts.

But then again, I do just looooooove resorts!

12- Love

Ah love. What they say about it is true: It makes the work go round and round - at least my world. And although I like to keep my personnal relationships private (Katie currently dates actor Chris Klein), I think certain people in my life know I don't take them for granted. It's an unspoken agreement. And if they don't realize that, then I am probably doing something wrong.

Katies Holmes appears in Pieces of April, in theaters October 17, and The Singing Detective, in theaters October 24.
