James bei Regis & Kelly

Hier ist das Transcript von James Auftritt in der "Regis & Kelly" Show vom 10. Oktober: James bei Regis & Kelly - 10. Oktober 2002 Regis: : You've seen him for years in Dawson's Creek. Now shaking up things in an edgy new movie called "The Rules of Attraction". Here's James Van Der Beek! Good to see you. Kelly: : Hi, honey, how are you? James: I'm great. Kelly: : You know, I went to this film festival in Australia. The director of your movie was there-- James: Roger? Kelly: : --and said amazing things about you, and they showed a twenty minute trailer and I couldn't believe it was you. It's such a departure from, you know, Dawson. Regis: : The high school Dawson is over with now. You have another year to go now. James: For this movie, yeah. There's no trace of him. Regis: : Now, Dawson is in college in this movie, right? --not as Dawson-- James: No, no, no, no, no-- Regis: : Just having a little fun with the name Dawson. James: Yeah. There's not a trace of Dawson in this one. Regis: : Different character--which I imagine you welcome. James: Oh yeah, I was really looking to do something different from what I do nine months out of the year. It was tough to get people to believe that I could do it, though. Kelly: : Did you ever do--'cause I know you got engaged last Christmas-- James: Yeah, right after Christmas. Kelly: : Right, congratulations. James: Thank you. Kelly: : Was it hard to go from the Dawson's set which is in… James: North Carolina. Kelly: : --North Carolina to shoot this? James: To "Rules" which was shot in LA. I was either working or flying seven days a week for about six weeks. Regis: : So the marriage is when? James: The marriage is next year. Regis: : Next year. So, are you getting a little nervous? James: No. I'm looking forward to it. We're in the planning stages right now. Kelly: : Are you helping plan? James: I'm doing my best to keep out of the way. [audience laughter] Regis: : Why don't you just elope like some people do, and get it over with? James: You know, we've actually thought about it a million times, but it would upset the families I think. Kelly: : It does upset the families. James: And I think in the end we would regret not having a day to celebrate it with everyone. Regis: : You're probably right. James: We have a lot of friends who have actually eloped and they just had a party afterwards, you know, and said "surprise". Regis: : So, tell us about this movie, now. You play a character totally different from Dawson. James: Yeah, he's actually, according to Bret Easton Ellis, who wrote the novel the movie's based on, he's the younger brother of Patrick Bateman who was the American Psycho. This guy's in college, he's not killing people--it's not a bloody movie--but he's just a really, really predatory, a really disturbed guy. It's one of those scripts I read and just loved. Regis: : So is this what's really going on in college, do you think? James: This is, you know--I mean, when parents watch this movie, if they have a kid in college, they are going to be pretty freaked out. [audience laughter] Regis: : I'm getting freaked out just thinking about it! [more audience laughter] James: I mean, I don't think that this is representative of everyone's college experience, and God I hope it isn't, but these people exist. I think it's really just the insecurities and confusion of being of being in college-- Regis: : A predatory human being, preying on young co-eds. Kelly: : See why I didn't go to college? You see why? [laughter] Regis: : Shall we look at a clip here? James: Sure. Regis: : I guess this kind of tells the story. You're like an emotional vampire, aren't you? James: Pretty much. Regis: : Let's take a look. [clip from "The Rules of Attraction", scene where Sean is cruising a bar] Voiceover: A great numb feeling washes over me as I let go of the past and look forward to the future. I pretend to be a vampire. I don't really mean "pretend" 'cause that's who I am, an emotional vampire. I just kind of respect it, that vampires are real, that I was born this way, that I feed off other people's real emotions. I search for this night's prey. Who will it be? [siren over the dance music as Sean approaches woman, the expression on his face changing gradually from vicious to something less threatening, almost--but not quite--friendly.] Woman: You look familiar. Have we met? [audience applause and cheers] Regis: : Oh, yeah. It looks like "American Psycho" goes back to college. Kelly: : It really does. James: Pretty much. My parents are going to see it tonight. Regis: : Are they really? Kelly: : Are you sure you want them to? James: You know, they're so supportive and so cool that I couldn't keep them away. They've seen me do some pretty crazy stuff on stage in New York and I tried to warn them. Kelly: : I saw the trailer and I know your performance is brilliant. Regis: : [over audience cheers] Go see it today, it opens all over the country today. "The Rules of Attraction"! James, good luck, buddy, see you soon.
