Cosmo Girl 03/04 - Katie Holmes
”I don’t wanna wait for our lives to be over” As the familiar sound of the Dawson’s Creek theme tune rings out for the final series this month, we grill it’s star, Katie Holmes, about getting engaged to Chris Klein and her upcoming film career.
So Katie, now Dawson’s Creek has finished what will you miss?
All my friendships, the town community and the crew. I’ll always look back and smile about it. I think I’m going to remain in contact with everyone. It was such a unique experience. I hope we stay in touch.
Bet you’ll miss the house you bought in Wilmington (where Dawson’s Creek was filmed) too?
Yes, but I sold it. It’s all gone now.
Do you feel lucky to have starred on the show?
This experience is so rare in this business and I’m going through it so early on, in my career. I’m so excited. I’ve had so much good luck and I want to keep trying to do good work.
When you go out in the street, do people call you Joey?
They usually identify me with Dawson’s. That’s nice, it’s fun and it’s not as if I can’t go anywhere. It’s great when people say nice things to you. There are not many businesses where you get that.
What are Dawson’s fans like?
There were some very enthusiastic fans who would come to Wilmington. It was sweet. Somebody told me there was a couple last summer who flew down to North Carolina and he proposed to the woman on the dock where we used to film. Some of that stuff is like, "Whoa I think this means more to you than it did to me!” But it’s fun. I’m sure I’ve been a crazy fan too.
Were you happy with who Joey ended up with in the end?
I think her choice makes sense from the way the characters all grew. I was really pleased with her final choice.
We all know about Joey, but what are you like?
While I’m grown-up in many ways, I lead a sheltered life too because of what I do. I’m childlike because I’m catered to, protected and don’t have it too hard. Kids who go away to college or backpack across Europe should probably shed some light on life for me! Sometimes I think I’d like to take off and just go to Europe and add to some of my creative juices!
Are you a family girl?
I feel so fortunate to have the family I have. They’re so supportive of me. We get along amazingly well.
o you all get together much?
My mum always makes big dinners. Thanksgiving has always been an exciting holiday. Maybe because I was the youngest one in the family and everybody was coming back for the holiday and gathering for Christmas. I love hanging out with them.
You’ve tended to avoid teen films. Why?
I don’t know. There are so many scripts out there and I want to do different things now. I’m getting older and my life experience is changing. I want to be an adult, so maybe in a couple of years I’ll be able to prove I can play an adult!
Does that mean you’re fed up with being a teen TV babe?
It’s been hard work, but it was fun. I started when I was 18 and now I’m 24. I love everyone so much from the show and the whole experience hasn’t hit me yet. We all just did our job and lived in a little bubble. We’d forget people watched the show. You’d do photoshoots and it didn’t dawn on you the show was actually something people liked. I miss the cast and crew every day.
Are you just going to do films now?
I’d never rule out doing TV again. Dawson’s Creek was a great experience and I’d love to do a series again. I loved our fans and hope they stay with us.
What about the future?
I think about writing sometimes. I’m always telling my dad he should write a book because he’s a good writer. But he says he’ll do something when there’s a good enough story to write about. I guess I feel the same. I think writing would be fun though
