Timeline thesp linked with Opera role. April 29, 2003 - According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scottish thesp Gerard Butler (next seen in Timeline and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life) is the frontrunner to portray the title character in the big-screen version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, The Phantom of the Opera. Joel Schumacher will direct the film and co-wrote the script with producer Webber. Filming commences this October. There's no domestic distributor yet. THR claims, however, that Butler is fielding other offers so his participation in Phantom is not a certainty. Incidentally, Hugh Jackman, a veteran of musical theater, revealed in an interview with IGN FilmForce that he was offered the Phantom role. "They rang to ask about my availability, probably about 20 other actors as well. I wasn't available, unfortunately. So, that was a bummer," Jackman said. Looks like Katie Holmes is no longer in the running for the female lead of "Christine." The trade paper says the final contenders are Anne Hathaway (The Princess Diaries) and Emmy Rossum (Day After Tomorrow). Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler in X2) and Alamo thesp Patrick Wilson have also been cast. Gerard Butler's credits include Reign of Fire and the title role in Dracula 2000. Quelle: filmforce.ign.com
