GN: JVDB Ladies and Gentlemen. Very good... *Crowd screams, whistles, claps for a prolonged time. GN looks impressed* That’s all we’ve got time for, join us tomorrow night... That’s a lot of whistling and clapping! JVDB: I feel very welcome, yeah. GN: They’re liking you Mister VDB... Are you just checking them out now? JVDB: Yeah. *laughs* *Crowd calms down* GN: Now listen, congratulations. Well, sort of... it’s a sad thing and it’s a good thing, Dawson’s Creek now... bye-bye. JVDB: Yeah, this will be the last year. Officially. The last year. We’re graduating. GN: Basically, you’re here to tell us about your new movie, RoA. And you’ve graduated in a big old leap with RoA. I mean it’s quite an out there movie. JVDB: It’s definitely not ‘safe’ entertainment. I mean, it’s got teeth. GN: It does. It’s basically about really kinda hedonistic students, college life. Now, you’ve been to college? JVDB: Yeah GN: You’ve been to real college, you’ve been to Dawson’s Creek college and you’ve been to RoA college. Now ROA or DC? What’s closest? JVDB: Well, scarily enough, RoA, is erm pretty accurate... That lifestyle’s out there. GN: I thought as much. No..it’s so not Dawsony. There’s drugs and all sorts... Rather than try to describe how different you are in this film, let’s look at a little clip. It’s very near the beginning but also sort of near the end, the way the film works. JVDB: Yes, it’s both. At the same time GN: Yeah, it sort of comes full circle. So here you are at a party. It’s the end of the world party isn’t it? JVDB: Yes, the End of the World party. [Clip of RoA with James and Kate Bosworth.] GN: Very good. It is a really good movie JVDB: Thank you. Thank you very much. GN: No, *earnestly* it is, it’s a really good movie. When does it come out here? JVDB: March 28th. GN: *laughs* I’m so glad you knew that. JVDB: I asked on the way here GN: March 28th, put it in your diary. There are some quite graphic scenes. I mean, probably the most graphic scenes...you escaped the worst scenes, I thought. Yeah. The vomiting on the girl...well... JVDB: Yeah... that’s just the first five minutes. GN: What did they say? At the London film festival apparently three people passed out. JVDB: Yeah, three men passed out. GN: What? I mean, even I...I’m a big poof and I watched it. So what bit did they pass out at? JVDB: They passed out at the scene in the bath tub. GN: Ooh, okay...I think they had issued. JVDB: *laughs* I’m really selling this movie well GN: No, it’s good. Marilyn Manson apparently said it was ‘f*cked up’. JVDB: Yeah, he was sitting in front of me at the screening where I saw it. And afterwards he turned around and said “Woah, that was dark.” GN: And he should know! JVDB: *raises eye brows* GN: I was reading about and you and sex scenes, that you weren’t very comfortable doing sex scenes. JVDB: Yeah, at first it’s a little awkward, being in front of the camera like that, but there is a nice easy solution. Which is...you just drink. GN: Like life. JVDB: Yeah, really. GN: So in this, are you drunk for those? JVDB: You know what, actually by this time I’d filmed enough that I didn’t need the alcohol. But the first time I did one, the girl and I just drank margaritas all night long... To a great effect actually. *laughs* In the scene she looked too slutty, so they ended up cutting it out of the movie. GN: Aww. Again, how like life. But worse, this only struck me watching the movie, that suddenly...there was a scene... cos you always think when you watch a nude scene or a sex scene it must be terrible being an actor... so revealing, so intimate. But in this, there’s a scene where at I just think how did you do that... it’s so much worse. Do you know the scene I’m talking about? JVDB: There are two I’m thinking of. One’s where I’m sitting down... GN: Yeah... the wiping your ass bit. No one sees you do that, at least one person sees you having sex...but no one sees you wiping your ass. JVDB: Originally in the scene, and this isn’t really much better, I was supposed to be on the can, smoking a joint. So, I was doing that and I got down to the end of it and there was none left, so I just kinda flicked it... and then they kept on rolling and of course you’re on the toilet, so what else are you gonna do?... And that’s the part they used... And in the United States, that was the first question everybody asked me too. GN: What? Is that the way you wipe your ass? JVDB: Well... they couldn’t get over it... it’s crazy. GN: That’s something intimately revealing. It’s something you don’t see in the movies. JVDB: I’d forgotten I’d even done it, really. And then I saw it in the film... Actually I wanted to stand up and take a bow. [Acting what he would have done:] *waves, kind of tips hat, nods.* ‘Nice work, see you at the Oscars.’ GN: Now, your most famous character is Dawson and comes from Dawson’s Creek, and we thought we’d have a look at some of the other strangely named places in the world. [They start looking at the strangest named places in the world. James remains interested throughout.] Whispered section as they call somebody in the US: GN: I didn’t even mention that Katie was on last night... JVDB: I heard that. GN: Yeah... Tall isn’t she? JVDB: Yeah she is tall. GN: Huge...like a giantess. [GN makes a phone call to a B&B in America] [Commercial Break] GN: Now, we were, erm...one of the things I was reading about Dawson’s Creek and people who often criticise Dawson’s Creek... when you were all 15 and 16 the way you all spoke on Dawson’s Creek... JVDB: Yeah, we did thirty years of therapy. GN: Yeah, it was all kind of therapy speak. Have you influenced kids now? Do you think that kids do talk like that more now? JVDB: Yeah, I think SAT scores have gone up... You know the little test they take to get into college...maybe the vocabulary tests have gone up. GN: Because that whole thing about the way they talk, it’s become a thing now...Dawson’s Speak. Or Creek Speak. JVDB: Yeah. Creek Speak. GN: Well someone, maybe you’ve this website already. JVDB: No, I haven’t. GN: Okay, well it’s a Dawson’s Speak site... [They look at the website and quotes] GN: Now, James...you’ve gone from playing your squeaky clean Dawson to bad boy drug dealer Sean Bateman in RoA.. and we were wondering what our audience would be if they could take a walk on the wild side... [The play ‘Born to be Wild’ to the end of the episode – Basically a number of people from the audience try to be ‘wild’ and James has to judge how successful they were. James looks mystified through most of it, but keeps smiling.] Quellen: James van der Beek Online, Fanforum.com
