Interview with Luke Mitchell & Nick Blood

June 8, 2016 | Luke Mitchell left a big impression with his portrayal of the conflicted character John Young in "The Tomorrow People". An impression so deep that I couldn't pass up the opportunity to ask him a few questions about this past role when we met him at MCM Hannover Comic Con for an interview with his "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D" castmate Nick Blood.

Nicole: OK, so "The Tomorrow People" fan over here!

Luke: Oh excellent!

Would you awfully mind if we get one or two "Tomorrow People" questions in?

Luke: No, no not at all.

Nick: I'll try to answer them as best as I can. (everyone laughs)

From all the roles I know you in that was your darkest material yet. So is the dark stuff the most challenging part of acting for you or the most fun part?

Luke: I definitely enjoyed the challenges that they threw at me in "Tomorrow People". I'm not sure, I mean it was definitely a dark character but I had my own challenges on SHIELD in terms of dealing with the anger issues because I'm not an especially angry person and so authentically portray anger was extremely challenging for me. So in terms of that that's been definitely been my biggest challenge as an actor. But going back to "Tomorrow People": They have given me a whole bunch of story from the beginning unlike on SHIELD, so I had so much to play with from early on which was really fantastic. I think it was one of the early episodes where we had a John-Young-centric episode. I mean that show for me was so much fun. It was my first American job as well and I think I grew a lot during the course of that show.

Nick: You were really small at the start... (everyone laughs).

Luke (laughs): I was very small and then I ate a lot... Yeah, no, I grew a lot as an actor (Nick laughs) and, yes... Sorry, did that answer your question?

Ehm yeah.

Luke (laughs): Kinda. Cool.

I thought it was really some "lightning in a bottle"-casting with Mark Pelledreamo and you as sort of father and son...

Luke: I loved working with Mark Pellegrino!

Yeah, that was my question: How did you build that tortured relationship and how was working with him?

Luke: He is just a brilliant actor and I was very very lucky to have most of my stuff with him. Because he was all about creating the best possible scene every single time. And I would go to his house and we talk about the scene and all this sort of stuff and he'd be like: Do you want to improv one? And this just doesn't happen in tv, especially on The CW. And that’s the sort of exciting environment that he brought to it and I was just like a sponge, I wanted to learn from him and go with it and trust my instincts. It just worked! We didn't have to try too hard which is kind of awesome. The casting just worked and I think the writers used that as the show progressed, as they saw our dynamic I guess.

The chemistry was really amazing between you two!

Luke: Awesome, I'm glad you liked it.

Yeah, I really miss that show.

I had a lot of people come up to me. It's really nice but it's also sad, because I feel like at the time that it was on I didn't get much feedback from it. And since, I think because of Netflix and things like that more people have been able to watch it but at the time, I don't know if it was the promotion or what it was but it's just the nature of the business you know if you don't get those numbers....

(Deep sigh. Everyone laughs.) Thank you so much for making time for us!

Luke and Nick: No worries! It was nice to meet you!
