Robert Patrick Interview
Robert Patrick September/ October 2002 interview Conducted by Amelia (his humble Assistant) Fans, I know that it has been a little more than a month, so thanks for being patient. We have been swamped, but RP and I finally found some time to sit down and do an interview. Here goes! Amelia: RP, you’ve taken on a lot of work right now. Can you give us a quick update into the craziness that is your current professional life? RP: SNITCH just finished. That was an intense 13-day shoot. A great script and a great cast, and I think it will be a great show. So, my fingers are crossed that it will get picked up. I really hope it does! CHARLIE’S ANGELS II has been a lot of fun so far. I’m back to that tomorrow. And FIRST TO DIE is a pretty challenging role. I’m trying to make some really specific choices for him. All of that should take me into December. I personally love working this way. Overlapping projects is something I really enjoy. The more the merrier! Amelia: I was blown away when I walked onto the SNITCH set and saw Coolio! How was it working with him? RP: Coolio was great, a lot of fun. And he’s very smart and quick witted. He lived up to his name. VERY cool. Amelia: Enough from me, now for some of your fan-generated questions. Boy have the boards been busy! “Coolbryne”: What kind of car is in this picture? (Sorry I can’t get the picture into the interview page, but it is of RP sitting at the wheel of a …) RP: That’s my ’68 GTO. I bought it in 1992. I still have it and love to drive it! I intend to give it to one of my kids when they are older. For the car buffs, it’s a 400 big block, 450 posi-traction, rear-end 4 barrel with quasi jets. “RPcrazy”: I have collected 45 of your movies, but have found little or no information on 2 of them – WINTER and OUT OF THESE ROOMS. Could you let us know about these? RP: I don’t know what WINTER is. But, OUT OF THESE ROOMS is a cameo I did for a friend (Harri James). It’s a film about sex-addicts. My wife, Barbara is in it too. It premiered at the Great Lakes Film Festival September 8th. We’re going to a cast and crew screening this month. I’ll let you know how it is. Amelia: The film received the President’s Vision Award at the Great Lakes Film Festival. “CeeHayCee” posted an OUT OF THESE ROOMS update (your fans are so industrious!) on your chat boards. Fans can check out www.outoftheserooms.com for more info. “Stevie”: Somewhere you mentioned that there were only about 5 of your films that you consider any good. What are they? RP: You’re actually holding me accountable for that quote? All right, but, since I said it, I have made a few more films. There are now seven I consider good. In order of my favorites: COPLAND, T2, THE ONLY THRILL, A TEXAS FUNERAL, FIRE IN THE SKY, THE FACULY, and SPY KIDS. Amelia: RP, your BACKFLASH “golf” pants have caused quite a stir on the chat boards. Would you care to comment? RP: I wore them at a point in the script where we (Jennifer Esposito and I) were trying to look like a married couple who had just come back from a game of golf at the country club. The pants were so ridiculous that I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to wear them. They were obviously very tight and uncomfortable and once I had them on, I couldn’t wait to take them off. By the way, that’s Michael J. Pollard from BONNIE AND CLYDE as the security guard. “Liz W”: Robert, how do you know when you read a script that it is something you want to do? Is it the character, the story, the dialogue or something else that appeals to you? Do you usually know right away when a part is right for you, or does it have to grow on you? RP: Good question. There are many things that I consider when looking at a project. Is the character one that I want to do? Is it challenging? Is it a movie I want to be involved with? Are there interesting people involved? Is it a good script overall? And unfortunately, where do I stand financially if I do or don’t take the project? “Lea”: I have noticed that you write left-handed and wear your watch on your right wrist, yet you shoot right-handed. Is that something you have just had to adapt to (not always a left-hand holster on the set for e.g.) or are you ambidextrous? RP: Another good question. I have found that I am a better aim and shot right-handed. Most weapons are set-up for right-handed people and the ejection port is on the right side. However, everything else, I do left-handed. “4dogg54”: As you know, your fans worldwide are quite willing to lay down good money at a movie theatre to see you in any kind of role, any kind of film. Which actors, male and female, are you willing to lay down good money to see? Why are they worth your dough? RP: I don’t get out to the movies much. And when I do, I’m going to whatever my wife and kids want to see. But, when I can’t wait to see a movie, it’s not always based so much on who’s in it, but if it looks like a good story. My favorite actor and actress right now are Albert Finney and Edie Falco. I also never miss a Ray Liotta movie and am very excited about the upcoming release of his film NARC. “Foxytime”: I’m a big movie fan and I like to check out everybody’s favorite movie. What is your favorite all time movie? RP: CITIZEN KANE, THE GODFATHER, LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL, APOCALYPSE NOW, RAGING BULL, BADLANDS, and THE DRESSER. “Dafydd”: In your career, you’ve played just about every conceivable character. But, you’ve never tackled the role of a gay man. Is that merely through lack of opportunity? I’ve often been struck by the sensitivity you bring to your roles and thought you could do a bang up job. RP: I’ve just never had the opportunity. I appreciate the question and suggest that if D-TOX ever gets released, you check it out. Amelia: Robert, “joy’s name here” actually directed a question to your lovely wife Barbara. So, I guess we’re done with you. Thanks so much for your time. “joy’s name here”: I very much enjoyed Mrs. Patrick’s performance in RELEASE (“The X-Files, season 9) and would love to know what she is up to these days. BP: Thank you. We’re remodeling our home and I am overseeing that day-to-day right now. I am also the Mom of two small children, but I audition when I can. Amelia: There was also a question for me! Stevie: Here's one slightly off-topic. It's a QUESTION FOR AMELIA! Please tell us how you got so lucky to get the job of Robert's assistant? What's it like working with him? You know you have many eager replacements should you ever decide to move away! Amelia: How did I land this dream job? Hard work, a little inside information and that indefinable “thing” that just clicked for the Patricks and me. That’s the short answer. How is it working for RP? Awesome! I’m sure you’re not at all surprised. Working for someone so full of energy, who works so hard and is so well respected, is a great pleasure. It’s intense, it’s tons of fun and it always keeps me on my toes. So, if anyone wants this gig, they’ll have to fight me for it! Thank you to everyone for your questions. It would be impossible to get to them all, but I do my best! Keep them coming and check back in a month!! Best! -Amelia http://www.safesearching.com
