Interview with We Were Evergreen
September 25, 2012 | We Were Evergreen is off to a small concert tour starting October 2012, which will lead them to England and France. Though the trio is busy preparing their tour and finishing their second EP, Michael Liot has readily answered our Soundcheck questions and told us a little bit about the band's musical development and goals as well as the trio's wishlist for a tour partner.
1. How would you describe your music in one sentence?
We blend indie poptronica with equatorial rhythm loops and vocal harmonies. Yep.
2. Was there something like a light bulb moment when you were young, maybe a concert, a certain song or a record that made you dream about a career as a musician?
Music found us in different ways: whereas William knew from very young he wanted to be a musician, it came more gradually to me and was even something of a surprise for Fabienne.
3. Are there any artists that might have influenced you or inspired you some time?
Everything inspires us all the time, in every kind of music. We take it all in.
4. How do you develop your songs? What part comes first, music or lyrics?
We like to think of most of the songs as little human beings: the lyrics and basic structure make up the skeleton, and everyone then brings in their organs and flesh with the arrangements.
5. What song is most important to you? Why and how did it develop?
"Baby Blue" is important for the band because it was the result of a truly collective outburst: it was created very quickly, while (as the song itself says) waiting in a van for the venue doors to open. We played it on that very night, and it has become, a couple years later, our first single!
6. In what aspects did your music change compared to when you started to make music?
Some of the songs and lyrics are still there, but the rest has changed a lot: what started out as a very laid-back, vocal-based folk project has now evolved into a blend of wooden instruments (ukulele, xylophone), electronic sounds and rhythm loops, hopefully a more creative mix which represents our current inspirations.
7. What has been the best experience so far, together as a band?
There have been many. This last year we moved from Paris to London, went to America, did some touring in other European countries, released out first single and were playlisted on some radios: all in all, it is a thrilling experience, sometimes scary, but always very human.
8. What can you tell us about your current projects?
We have a new EP coming out at the end of October with new songs - exciting! Just before that, we will be going to New York for CMJ Festival - even more exciting!
9. And what are you aspiring to in the future, what do you want to achieve?
In a near future - release our first album. In a further future - conquer the world.
10. With whom would you like to go on tour?
Dirty Projectors, Vampire Weekend, Tune-Yards, Animal Collective (call us!).
11. What record would we find in your CD-player right now?
You would find The XX - "Coexist" in Fabienne's, Siobhan Wilson - "Glorified Demons EP" in William's, and Marbert Rocel - "Small Hours" in mine.
12. What do you think, as artists, about platforms like Facebook, Twitter and mySpace?
I'm afraid social networks are impossible to do without these days: in truth, they're actually a very good way to keep people who like the band updated and have a closer relationship with the band.
13. myFanbase is a website that is devoted to American television shows. Do you have a favorite show?
Growing up in the 90s/00s means "Friends" was inevitably a big thing for me, just like "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" for William. For some reason Fabienne watched "Bewitched" reruns.
Thank you very much for the interview and all the best.
